Essential oils for Moms & Tots.

So many women want to utilize the natural health benefits of essential oils during pregnancy but are worried about the extensive warnings out there.

Of course, there is always wisdom in precaution! But journeying for the past year and a half, I have come to learn that this truly IS a gift from our Heavenly Father, meant to bless and serve us in ways we don’t even fully understand.

There are so many potential benefits to mommy and baby (and family) in these wonderful plant compounds, that it truly deserves some room for consideration.

What are essential oils?

They are nature’s volatile aromatic compounds generated within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds. They are the “life force” of the plant, essential for the plant to exist. So truly, essential oil is just a very concentrated form of the plant, in the drops in the bottle.


In growing my understanding of essential oils and “where they come from”, after doing my research and having peace of mind, I truly believe that Young Living Essential oils are of the purest in the world. They are the oils that I use, and love, and trust, and are the only company’s oils that I can recommend with full assurance of heart.

The two oils that I want to highlight relating to today’s blog are Lavender and Frankincense both that are perfectly safe to use on and around pregnant mommies and babies. (With proper dilution as required!)

Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii) has a broad range of uses, from enhancing the spiritual and meditative practice to use in beauty routines. In the case of using these oils for massaging or a connecting experience, the essential oils will be diluted / extended with a carrier oil.

What is a carrier oil?

It is a vegetable oil derived from the fatty portion of a plant (seeds, nuts and kernels). Mixing the essential oil with carrier oil will not diminish the effects of that oil, it just allows for dilution to avoid sensitivity in tender skin (as with a baby). It also allows for a greater volume of oil to work to cover a larger surface (as in the case of massaging).

There are many types of carrier oils to use, however the ones I suggest relating to today’s post would be organic cold-pressed:

– extra virgin olive oil

– odourless coconut oil

– grapeseed oil

For a general guideline, you could work on a 3% dilution for mom, which is about 6 drops of essential oil, per 10 ml of carrier oil.

For baby, depending on the age, about one or two drops of essential oil, per 15 ml carrier oil.

This is not a fixed rule, as you can adjust the dilution according to your specific needs at any time! Both of these oils are “gentle oils” and do not require dilution except for use on very delicate skin.

Rather start with little, and adjust as you grow inexperience.

The idea is that through engaging in the connectedness of massaging a tired mommy – to –be at the end of a long day or getting dad to connect with his little bundle of blessing, the therapeutic benefits of the oil can serve all parties involved.

Additionally, the presence of a diffuser in the room can maximise the potential of the aromatic experience of the oils in a greater, and non-invasive way. Helping to create the desired atmosphere where all participants can benefit.

The possibilities with essential oils are endless, and the circumstances and the needs in every family, unique. It would be my privilege to share some more of my heart or journey with anyone interested.
